With 10,000 Baby Boomers reaching retirement age every day, succession planning has never been more important than in today’s multi-generational workforce. Unfortunately, there are not nearly enough GenX or Millennial leaders available to fill those shoes. In addition, those who are available often do not possess the skills or motivation needed to succeed in higher-level leadership positions. Succession planning in today’s multi-generational work environment is a whole new ballgame!

In this workshop, we will review cutting-edge strategies for succession planning and developing our next generation of leaders for higher-level roles. Throughout our conversation, we will focus on five areas:

  • 1.    NextGen motivation: When our parents were given opportunities for promotions, they immediately took them. In contrast, GenX and Millennial leaders often turn down these same opportunities when they do not align with their passions or life goals. How can succession planners assess the motivations of our next generation leaders?
  • 2.    Continued engagement:Baby Boomers are not just retiring to the golf course like previous generations have. These days, there are many ways for them to remain engaged with their organizations – on reduced schedules, as contract consultants, as mentors for future leaders. How can we include these strategies in our succession plans?
  • 3.    Internal mentoring: There’s a lot that organizations can do internally to mentor their NextGen leaders separate from formal succession planning processes. What are some success criteria and pitfalls for these mentoring programs?
  • 4.    High-level succession plan:Succession planning is not something completed overnight. It can take many months if not years to orchestrate these highly-charged and personally-sensitive leadership transitions. What are the hidden strategies behind an effective succession plan?
  • 5.    Leadership development & coaching: The foundation for succession planning is developing next-generation leaders to step up and also coaching leaders in transition to step out. What are the primary objectives for leadership development and transition coaching? What methods work best in different organizations?

(We welcome senior practitioners to add to this discussion, share your own experiences and lessons learned with succession planning, and raise other questions you may want to discuss.)
