South Bay GIG "Training Professional's Breakfast Meeting"

Meeting the 1st Friday of every month (7:30 a.m. - 9 a.m.) in Torrance

These "Training Professional's Breakfasts" are friendly, interactive, and focused on professional development in the field of performance improvement. These meetings always end by 9:00 AM – so the rest of your day is still open.  Networking among internals and externals is encouraged and welcomed, though this is a "sales-free" zone.

Visit us and you'll also see why we enjoy our meeting space, generously provided by the Toyota Auto Museum in Torrance.

In 2015 we will have speaker meetings and text-study RoundTable alternating months:

  • One month, meetings will feature guest speakers, experts, and case studies, on issues important to training and development professionals across a variety of industries, including external consultants.
  • The other month, meetings will use the GEMS Text Study RoundTable methodology.  We will spend a few minutes reading a selected text or article from leading publications on cutting edge ideas in our field.  We will then hear participants' thoughts and experiences on the topic, time divided equally among all present.
Check our calendar for more details. For additional information, please contact Anthony Markovich, anthonymarkovich@gmail.com

    Building Empathy

Meaningful interpersonal connections in the workplace can be tremendously difficult to make - even when we have the best of intentions.  What does it mean to show true empathy for another human, how do we do it, and what's the benefit?  These are just a few of the topics we will explore in this RoundTable session.

Join your fellow colleagues as we share our thoughts on building empathy with others, including colleagues and clients in the workplace.  Our discussion will be inspired by a thought provoking coaching tip by Tom Henschel:  Building Empathy.

    Our Session Format:

The RoundTable is an exciting approach that stimulates incredible conversation and insight around the topics and trends impacting our discipline.

We will read the selected piece aloud together for about 15 minutes.  Then for the next 45 minutes, we offer everyone in attendance equal time to share their thoughts and experiences on or around the topic. Come explore with us!

The GEMS RoundTable format is provided by Sue Gabriele, President and Owner, Gabriele Educational Materials and Systems.

Hold On to Employees by Letting Them Go

To retain top talent, companies might want to make it easier for people to go - to another role or department that is.  In fact, many leaders believe they can do a better job of hanging on to workers by focusing on their development rather than their "retention" in the traditional sense.

Join your fellow colleagues as we explore advanced strategies for holding on to employees.  Our discussion will be inspired by an article from Ryan Holmes published in a recent issue of Fast Company magazine.

Enhancing Global Virtual Teams Through Training

Much of today's work is accomplished in global virtual teams, but how effectively is training preparing these teams to succeed?  The stakes are high for these teams to deliver, but too often, they are not fully effective due to complexity, lack of team cohesion, competing priorities, and other factors.  Training can play an important role in driving performance to a higher level.

Join your fellow colleagues as we explore and discuss a proposed model for virtual team success.  Our discussion will be inspired by an article from Marjorie Derven published in a recent issue of Training magazine.
